Are You Black?

That's the question that was posed this morning when I call a woman who is offering free housing in exchange for babysitting her brats children. I'm getting desperate here and the idea of not having to pay rent is very alluring.

I guess she thought that since I was born in the Bronx that I must be a hardcore, gangsta rap loving, gun toting black person. Since I was a little taken aback and caught off guard I just answered the question truthfully. And her response was "Oh that's great my children really haven't been exposed to that many different types of people especially black ones." And so in an effort to save the world from their fear of black people I have decided to meet with her at 3PM today.

Oh the French gotta love them.

Maybe they'd actually pay you in addition to the free rent if you told them you were also a jewish lesbian ex-abused spouse formerly married to Britney Spears' brother.

Ok, maybe the Britney part is a little over the top...

Good luck !

Well the woman was actually really nice she speaks 8 languages and the children speak 4. She was adamant that she wasn't looking for a babysitter as the kids already have a nounou but for someone to practice English with. Her children's schedules are jam packed with activities I'd be surprised if they have any free time to be kids. Ultimately, I'm still "homeless-ish" because I've decided that I don't want to live in the jail cell that she was offering me for free and that's no exaggeration.

Hello! I really enjoyed your blog. I just have a question...Back in NYC, what were you doing? I know many Americans take up teaching jobs abroad so I am interested what you did before. Good luck.
BTW I didnt check those subusrbs on the map...but Parisian suburbs, that sounds kind of dangerous:)But I really did not look,so I am admitting beforehand my stereotyping, linda

Down here in the south, a friend of mine has taken in a Senegalese male student for a couple of months. She's been wondering why her neighbours started ignoring her. It wasn't because she suddenly had a (young) man in the house, it was because he is black. She only found out from the village shop centrale de gossip local.

I kid you not! Talk about gobsmacked.
