Mama Needs a New iPhone

Last night I with friends to a mutual friend's concert in Ivry right outside of the southeastern Paris. After the concert we decided to head home and make it an early night since most of us were still recovering from a Noctilien bus ride the evening before. We rode the metro together until Place d'Italie where Sam and I got off to switch to our respective metro lines. I hopped on my metro, sat down, and took out the jPhone to play a game to pass the time. I noticed a tall a man standing in front of the fold down seat to my right and thought nothing of him at the time. I couldn't even describe him if I had to except to say that he was wearing an army green jacket. A stop or two later a family got on the metro with their cute young son in tow. I took a few seconds to glance at the tot and before I knew it we were at the next stop where the doors to the metro opened and the tall man standing to my left snatch my jPhone from my hands, ran off the train and began running along the unusually empty train platform. I did the only thing I could think of started to run after him in my 3 inch heels and dress. Half way across the platform I ditched the shoes because they were slowing me down, ran up the stairs and only to discover that the phone thief had disappeared into the night.

During the whole ordeal I was in complete shock as to what was taking place. During the rest of my metro ride home I felt a brief period of anger but the enduring emotion is disappointment in myself for being so careless and somewhat naive. What happened to me is one of those things that you read about and hear from other people but never think could happen to you until of course it does.

Oh no!!! The same thing happened to me with my brand new iPod last year, except I was too stunned to even chase the guy off the metro. I think I figured if I could hold my own in big & bad New York City something like that couldn't possibly happen to ME in Paris... but alas...
Anyway, I'm so sorry to hear that. It sucks :o(

I'm sorry to read that some dirt bag stole your phone. I hope you are able to get another iphone soon.

That's so horrible! It doesn't even sound like something that could happen in real life. Really sorry to hear about this.

That seriously blows. I remember Kathryn telling me how that exact thing happened to her on the metro, too, but she fought the guy off somehow. I'm so paranoid that I wouldn't be at all surprised of something like that happening to me.

I wonder if I'll be able to recognize you without your J-phone....my poor belle. :(

Girl, I wish I would've still been on the metro with you, I would've chased him down in my practical shoes.

Thanks all for your kind comments. Every time I recount the story (I just retold it to the maternal unit) I can't help but laugh at what happened even though there's really nothing funny about it. I guess it's all still a little surreal to me.

Stacy: You could have mentioned that sooner :)

Benny: I hope to get a new and improved version this summer budget permitting.

Mira: It still seems surreal to me.

Sarah: You'll have to get used to looking at my visage instead of the top of my head all the time. An adjustment for sure.

Ksam: Had you an KD agreed to go for another drink after the concert the whole thing could have been avoided...or things could have ended up a lot worse.

This is really something else and not the first time I've heard this exact same story, either. I'm glad that in the end, you were okay and safe.

HA! I so would have ran after the bastard too. Stupid F-er. Do they make insurance for those pricey jthings? Cause they totally should.

P.S. - Marc says you can borrow his for the prix d'ami of 100 euros per day. Pfff! And we thought he was nice! ;)

I don't know anything about those phones, so this question might be kind of naïve, but can he use the phone and stick you with charges? Is it like a credit card that you can cancel? Or does it require a code to use?

And if you have software applications installed, how easy is it to get them onto a new phone?

You see, I'm totally clueless.

And, my word verification is: disifyin. There's a joke in there somewhere but I can't work it out.

oh that totally sucks! I keep running into people here saying they've gotten stuff stolen from them and I I just can't believe... not my pretty Paris stealing phones and ipods! That's just terrible...

Hi Walt, the phone was just like any other phone with a monthly plan. Theoretically he could have called all over the world and stuck me with the charges but thankfully I was able to put a block on the account when I got home.

My primary concern was his access to my email, twitter, facebook and itunes accounts so I changed all those passwords as soon as I got home.

Went to Orange today and I was able to get a replacement SIM Card at no cost.

Sounds like Saturday was the night for thieves to target us poor anglophone bloggers:

That's really sad... I hope the iPhone 3G has new cool apps that can stop this kind of things from happening... Like you can totally lock your phone when snatched or self destruct...
